This method allows us to guide the development of your child’s facial structure early and finish with a beautifully aligned smile once all adult teeth have come in.
At Happy Braces Orthodontics, we believe in giving your child the best possible start toward a lifetime of confident smiles. That’s why we offer Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment, a comprehensive approach that addresses both jaw development and tooth alignment at just the right stages of growth.
Why Choose Two-Phase Treatment?

Supports Jaw and Facial Development
The first phase helps ensure that the upper and lower jaws are growing in harmony, which is essential for proper bite and function.

Creates Space for Permanent Teeth
By addressing crowding and misalignment early, we reduce the need for extractions or more invasive treatment later.

Improves Long-Term Stability
When orthodontic issues are tackled in two targeted phases, the results tend to be more stable and lasting.

Minimizes Treatment Time Later
By getting ahead of developmental issues, we can often shorten or simplify the second phase of treatment

Boosts Confidence Early
Correcting noticeable issues in the early years helps kids feel better about their smile while their adult teeth are still developing.
What Is Two-Phase Treatment?
Two-phase treatment is an orthodontic process that includes two distinct stages of care, typically spread out over several years:
Phase One: Early Intervention (Usually Ages 7–10)
The first phase focuses on guiding jaw growth and correcting functional problems while some baby teeth are still present.
Treatments may include:
- Expanders to widen the jaw
- Partial braces
- Space maintainers
- Habit-breaking appliances (for thumb-sucking or tongue thrusting)
- Functional appliances for jaw alignment
Once this phase is complete, your child enters a resting phase where we monitor growth and allow remaining adult teeth to emerge naturally.
Phase Two: Full Alignment (Usually Ages 11–14)
Once most or all permanent teeth have come in, we begin the second phase. This typically involves full braces or clear aligners to straighten teeth and fine-tune the bite.
Goals of Phase Two:
- Achieve ideal tooth alignment
- Ensure a stable bite
- Improve aesthetics and function
- Maintain results with a custom retainer
What to Expect During the Process

Initial Consultation
Dr. Babak Yousefi will evaluate your child’s smile, take digital X-rays or scans, and determine if two-phase treatment is recommended.

Phase One Treatment
If needed, we’ll begin early intervention to correct foundational issues and guide healthy growth.

Resting Phase
After Phase One, we’ll monitor your child’s development with occasional check-ups as their adult teeth come in.

Phase Two Treatment
Once your child’s adult teeth have erupted, we’ll move into the second phase of care to complete the alignment and bite correction.

Retention
To keep the new smile in place, we’ll provide a retainer and guidance for long-term maintenance.
Common Questions
Does every child need two-phase treatment?
No—many children can wait until all permanent teeth are in before starting treatment. Two-phase care is best for specific developmental issues.
Is two-phase treatment more expensive?
Not necessarily. In some cases, early intervention reduces the need for future procedures, balancing out the overall cost.
What happens if we skip early treatment?
Delaying care could result in more invasive treatment later, such as tooth extractions or jaw surgery. Early treatment can help prevent that.
Is it covered by insurance?
Most dental insurance plans (including Medi-Cal) cover medically necessary orthodontic care. We’ll help you understand your benefits and payment options.
